This lush tropical entry garden in Lanikai is my inspiration!
I feel like I`ve spent the whole weekend pulling weeds in our yard. I often wonder how many I need to pull every day to keep ahead of them. 😜
Is anyone else out there feeling overwhelmed by weeds?

This iconic lifeguard hut and its companion ironwood tree are now perched uncomfortably close to an 8-foot drop to the beach.
We`ve lost several ironwoods to erosion this winter. Hoping the beach will build back with more sand as we head into spring. 🥺

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!
The waves in the foreground are flowing into Kaelepulu Canal. It`s been open for over a week thanks to the New Year`s Day storm.
It`s been so wet here with overnight rains that the grass is way too wet to mow — so more time for other projects! 😊

The saying "If you want rainbows, you have to put up with some rain" is so true! The rainy weather we`ve been having is delivering lots of rainbows.
This rainbow was photographed at the Kailua Beach Park, where there are hundreds of pigeons. I only had to wait a few minutes for one to fly into a nice position.

Little changes on a personal level can make a big impact.
Plant a few fruit trees, grow your own veggies and share the bounty with your friends and neighbors.
Be kind and spread Aloha in 2022!

One more look at the holiday lights along Kaelepulu Canal — soon the decorations will be put away and many of us will be heading back to work. I love my day job, but I`ve really enjoyed this time off at the end of the year! ...
Unbelievable color — but real. The low-hanging clouds from the Kona storm looked like they were on fire for a few brief minutes this morning. ...
It was a stormy first day of 2022...
The beach was nearly deserted, rain squalls punctuated the horizon, and the sun barely broke through the clouds.
Dozens of Iwa birds were flying along the shore, a sure sign of even more stormy weather to come — and they were right! By sundown, we`ve had nearly six inches of rain, streets are flooded, and the electricity is flickering. What a start to the New Year!

Walking on water... this seemed a fitting image for ending a year that was full of the unexpected.
Waves washing over the sand berm between the beach and Kaelepulu Canal created the illusion of this father and son walking -- and dancing -- on water. (Swipe for a closer view)
Wishing you a new year filled with happiness and beauty.
Aloha!

The Christmas sunrise. It was a very busy morning at the beach park -- lots of families with beach toys, and couples wearing Santa hats enjoying an early stroll on the beach with coffee. ...
So cute... but will he survive the coming wave?
Swipe to see the other island-style snowman and a driftwood Christmas tree I came across on Kailua Beach this last week.
...
Holiday lights strung around coconut trees made the cruise down Kaelepulu Canal on Christmas truly enchanting.
It was fun to see so many families celebrating together along and in the water!

Mele Kalikimaka!
Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you have a wonderful day with friends and family (even if it`s via Zoom) 🎄

Mele Kalikimaka: It`s a Kailua Christmas chicken
This rather proud fellow posed for a Christmas photo in front of the brilliant red poinsettias outside WholeFoods. If you live in Kailua you know that chickens have overrun the town! I don`t know why or when this happened, but it sure seems like they are everywhere now.
If you have a theory on Kailua`s chicken population explosion, I would love to hear it!

It feels like the seasons have changed here. The air was very crisp and cool this morning — I even put on a sweatshirt! This tropical yard filled with bananas, colorful bougainvillea, and bromeliads is one I pass on my way to the beach. If you look closely you`ll see a fun chicken sculpture. ...
What a magical sunrise at Castle`s Beach this morning! 😍 ...
Happy Aloha Friday! A lone bodysurfer waits for the next swell. On this incredibly clear morning, you can see Molokai silhouetted between the Mokes and Lanikai Point. ...
Here be dragons — lurking in the sand. This charming dragon must have spent the night on the beach, he has tiny crab footprints covering his face and his wings.
The expression "here be dragons" comes from medieval maps that added illustrations of dragons, sea monsters, and other mythological creatures on uncharted areas where potential dangers were thought to exist.
I`m sure the idea of running into a dragon stopped more than a few explorers.

Watching the sunrise with someone dear is such a wonderful way to start your day. This is at the Kalama Beach park area of Kailua Beach. ...
This pretty 2-story plantation-style home is just a short stroll to lovely Lanikai beach. Nice place to call home! ...
